This is the same tree from Jan 21 post, showing herself in her many different moods. I was outside taking another shot and was walking back inside, looked over my shoulder and this was the scene. Looked like it was about to snow and the SUN (looks like the moon, but is the sun) was masked behind these thick low grey clouds.
I took 2 shots, one was 3 stops underexposed (to expose for sun’s brightness) and one shot, 1 stop overexposed (to get some detail in branches against sky). I merged them together as HDR shot and this was it. No further adjustments – nothing. The sky is like a grey slate and tree almost stuck there. So simple, nothing flashy, just nature in all her beauty. Love it!

I like the faint halo around the sun
very subtle but so nice. This image surprised me.
You live in an awfully pretty place! Thanks for sharing
And thanks for visiting.

I just love this. love it.
Thanks Lance and love the paintings on your site. Anytime you want to paint one of my photos, go ahead.
Great composition. Watery sun, with a halo, and the sparse, dark branches of the trees. Great shot.
Thanks Kate, appreciate it.
I love how you captured it! Thanks for liking my #febphotoaday posts. Really appreciate it.
No problem Dee and thanks for visiting.
Gorgeous! Love it, too. Simple, clean, beautiful!
Sorry to be so ignorant but, what is HDR? Love learning stuff, so would be helpful… one day I’m going to really get to grips with my camera and learn how to actually work the thing! I should start tomorrow and read the book that is sitting on the shelf!
HDR is High Dynamic Range. What does that mean? Well unlike the human eye, cameras have a limited range for processing brightness and shadows. So if you are taking a picture of a high contrast or range subject, something has to give. In this image if I didn’t use HDR technique, I would have to expose for the sun – which means that rest of the picture would be too dark and will lose all detail in the shadow and you wouldn’t see the branches. If I exposed for the tree, then I would see the branch detail, but I wouldn’t see the sun, the whole sky scene would be white.
So by taking 2 pictures. 1. Expose for Sun and 2. Expose for Tree and then layer (put them on top of each other), I will have detail of both sun and tree. Super easy and anyone can do it.
Very nice, and cool
I’ve never tried that. Thank you.
It’s a very beautiful photo. Loved it.
Thanks for stopping by Onelifethislife and liking my post “Peaceful State of Mind.” I think this is a beautiful photo. Prior to reading the post, I thought the photo that was taken at night. Wonderful B&W!
Really excellent. I love shots such as those. Good to hear how you merged the two images.
As another newbie to photography, thank you for the tutorial on HDR! Another new toy to play with!!
